Playing in the park, jumping and running around is a great way to ensure that your child remains physically active and fit. However, there’s also a lot of mental stimulation required to be given to these cute kids of ours.
The plethora of board games and online activities can be addictive at times, and sooner than we can imagine, the increased hours of these online games become quite menacing.
So, here’s a list of few games that can help build your child’s creativity and make her learn the basics of elementary school in an engaging and fun manner!
Dumb charade: This all-time favourite of ours can be twisted easily for toddlers. Ask them to think of any object and do actions that depict that object and mumma will guess. You will be surprised to see your child’s creativity when she does actions to depict actions for eating, driving, and dolphin swimming! And when it’s your turn to do actions, pick up things you want her to learn: modes of transport, animals, human emotions/expressions, names of games etc.
Colour-object game: Get them to associate colours to objects. Say a colour and ask them to say two objects that are from that colour. Get more people of the family to play this one, and then everyone is required to say two objects of the mentioned colour (an object once said can’t be repeated by the other player). This way, in case of 3 people are playing, your child learns 6 things of that colour instantly; while also making an attempt to think of objects herself! A word of caution in this one: As adults you yourself would find trouble in thinking of more colours, don’t agree with me? Here’s a test- think of 5 objects that are orange in colour! And mind you, these objects should be such that a child relates to its existence in her eco-system.
The plus-minus game: This is my girl’s favourite. I would create a scene for her, you have 2 chocolates, papa comes from market and gives you one more, how many chocolates have you got now? You have 5 clay boxes, your friend (say the name of her friend) comes and takes 2 at her house, how many would you have? During the initial days, we had to show this to her with real objects, so with the help of pens/clips etc., we would play this one, till the time she got hang of it. We have now introduced the hand counting thing and ask her to raise her fingers for the numbers which are being talked in the scene. She has only been taught the counting in the school till now, we hope till the time she gets to learn addition and subtraction, she would have the concept of adding and deleting clear in her mind.
Chidiya udh: You of course remember this one? Introduce this game to your child right during her kinder garden days. This is a fantastic game to teach objects/animals that fly and those who do not.
Name-Place-Animal-Thing: Again, our school classic game. Instead of doing the writing version of this, do the verbal thing, simply because your child can’t write at this age. Give her an alphabet and she has to say a name (from amongst the family members or her friends) from that letter, and an animal and an object. See, I have eliminated the place from the game, because that’s too much right now. And then she gives you an alphabet and you to say the name-animal-thing from that alphabet. Keep asking her if you answered correctly!
These are simple fun family games that could be played when you reach back from office, and just want to be on the bed, while spending some quality time with your little one. Do try them and share your experience here!
