Lalit Modi is in news yet again and this time with Sushma Swaraj. The events of the last couple of days have got us viewers glued to prime time news like never before. What’s his lawyer going to say? What’s Lalit Modi gonna tell Rajdeep? Will Arun Jaitley-Rajnath Singh-Narendra Modi back Sushma?
This case is a classic example of what happens in the corporate world on a regular basis.
You have a top performer in your team, who has been doing his job exceedingly well. However, there is one mistake that he makes. What do you do? Do you back him up then or do you reprimand him? Considering all his efforts which have helped you in past, all his potential that can take you to further heights in the future and his unique skills, should you take a stand now because the larger voice is growing against him?
Sushma Swaraj was just till last month being touted as one of the best performing ministers of Indian government. A nationwide poll published by Times of India on 11th May 2015, said 56% of respondents felt her performance was good. Her response time, her helping of Indians abroad, her work in emergency international crisis for Indians etc. was getting praises from all over. On Twitter, she is one of the most followed Foreign Ministers across all countries! That is no small feat. Her response to people from all across, at any given hour of the day is just teremendous.
But now she is stuck up in a controversy which states that she unlawfully helped Lalit Modi with his travel documents. The details of this event are unfurling every day, every hour, and we are all closely watching and opiniating on the issue.
But the question is: Does it make sense for her to resign? Does it make sense for us to lose on the best performing minister for this issue? If not, then should we just ignore the issue and let it die its natural death?
I ask you, dear citizen, what’s your view on this? Forget what the media is saying, forget what the opposition is claiming, and forget what the experts say.
Just on plain facts, what’s your view? Should she resign?
For me, I don’t really care why and how she helped a not-so-nice guy get a Visa. It’s okay if her daughter represented him in court- she is into a profession, she needs to represent people! What Ministry of External Affairs has been doing for Indian citizens living in and out of India is much more important to me.
I think very clearly, and very honestly we need to accept a fact that there are a lot of things that keep happening behind closed doors, especially with people in power. There are mistakes people make and there are outright corruption people get into. Some of the things, which when revealed, should be okay with us and there are some which shouldn’t. Let us judge and take that call on a case by case basis. In the absence of a rule book which is made by the people for the people with the people which clearly defines the level of pardon we citizens can give, we just need to tag issues as small and big and then move on.
I am not okay to have another minister in her place and experiment with another minister, only to be told by some channel that he is involved in some other wrong-doing. I don’t know if what she did was right or wrong but what I do know is that I am not in favour of her resignation. You can’t lose your best people just like that.
There is a dearth of talent across industries, there are innumerous studies that have said that. All organizations are doing their best to retaint their top performers. Time and again, we have seen good managers covering up fora top performer’s mistakes. It’s really alright. We all know our PM is running his cabinet like an organization in true sense. So the same rule applies to them as well.
Continue your great work Dear Minister. People centric ministers like you are a rare find.
Before I end, I must say that I do not have any political affiliations with any party. I am a citizen of this country who votes, observes and speaks!
