Common Mistakes Most Corporate Professionals Make with their Learning & Development

Learning mistakes corporate professionals make

You can only learn if YOU want to.

Learning mistakes most corporate professionals make is to become dependent on their employer/manager/HR for their learning.

Human beings have an astonishing ability to learn, but our motivation to do so tends to decrease with age, particularly in adulthood. There is now a big demand for employees who can demonstrate high levels of learning.

“The learn-it-all will always do better than the know-it all.” Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft had said.

Learning Mind-set is about having the willingness to grow, to experiment and to just fall in love with the concept of learning. More than 100 people participated in a Learning Survey I launched last week.

The intent of the survey was to understand What Motivates a Corporate Professional to learn.

Bryan Caplan, professor of economics at George Mason University, says that education often isn’t so much about learning useful job skills, but about people showing off, or “signaling.”

70% of respondents to the Learning Survey take up learning to get a tangible outcome:

  • Promotion,
  • New job or
  • To get better in their current role.

Less than 25% take up learning for their own happiness.

To develop soft or functional skills, most respondents of the survey are governed by the choices their employer is making for them. Be it enrolling them for class room training, giving them exposure of projects, assigning a coach or mentor etc.

In a global research, 75% were dissatisfied with their company’s L&D programs.

Take a moment to reflect this. If you are still governed by the learning choices your company is making for you, you are ultimately going to land in this 75% that is dis-satisfied with their company’s L&D.

In the Learning survey, a question was asked on effectivess of corporate learning.

55% of respondents said corporate trainings have NOT been effective for their self development. As per global study and research, this figure is as low as 10%.

Most employer led learning programs are ineffective.

What’s important for you to know is not why they fail but what should you do if you are learning only when you are being made to learn.

Learn because you want to, not because you have to.

With the constant war for talent, inability of organizations to grow internal leaders, and forever changing landscape of hot skills, be rest assured that you will not be in the talent race if you continue being a spectator.

Own your learning.
