No questions asked when you start serving notice period!

Hey, I heard you resigned? Why? What happened? Where are you going?

Typically, this is how the curious questions start pouring in when the news of your resignation starts spreading at your workplace. However, these are not questions, these are just validation statements. Suddenly people inside get a confidante and hope they can speak to!

Yes, I resigned, had some personal things to be taken care of. I have a few offers in hand and would see which one I pick up

For some odd reason, every person who resigns has more than one offer in hand. It’s just a subtle way to tell your current employer- You loser, you didn’t realize my value and there are multiple employers willing to take me. And at better and bigger salary. Ah and yes, I do get the work flexibility there.

Serving your notice period can be both a liberating and stressful period. You are freed from the slavery of punctuality, work delivery and commitments but at times the agony of discussing your last working day, full & final settlements and relieving formalities stress you out completely.

But the best time about the notice period is when your colleagues start coming and sharing their sob stories with you. Even I am looking out, tell me, how does naukri.com work? Do you know of any consultants who could help me? That’s the problem with this place- there is no culture, no vision. And you know what he did that day..!

The multitude of stories justifies your action and you suddenly start feeling proud of your decision. You go home and flaunt to your family members, there are many who want to leave, but as of now, only I got an offer. The herd mentality helps your family to come at peace with your decision, though they keep wondering, during the last Diwali family party, everyone seemed happy.

However, there’s another story brewing inside the workplace. You know he is leaving because he wasn’t performing well. He is being asked to go. Some well-wisher of yours comes and tells you of these developments and you boil up with anger. You go to your boss who pleads ignorance. Whereas he is the one who is spreading these rumours. Yours would be the 3rd attrition in his team this year; he can’t afford to be called as a bad boss.

I am a self-respecting human being and I want to leave on a good note. Such false stories disturb me.

Come on, don’t bother, you can’t stop people from saying what they want to. You ensure the handover is done properly and leave amiably.

And you believe him. Just as you had done when you decided to join him and during every review and during every meeting. You start enjoying your notice period by taking more coffee breaks, being on long telephone calls with your friends, tweeting non-stop, shopping for all stupid stuff online and by meeting people inside the office talking about what led to your decision. Such is the power of your freedom that you become the envy of everyone in the office. When will my time come? He is stupid to take that decision at this point of his career. I wonder if we will ever find a good replacement for him. How could he get a job, he was good for nothing! I will message him after a week, in case he has an opening for me too.

No questions asked when you start serving notice period is actually how this period could be summed up, because people have a lot of questions in their mind, but they wait for you to completely leave the company before having the guts to ask you, but once you leave, they don’t really care anymore, because for them life goes on!
