Karan Johar in his famous Koffee with Karan series used to ask his guests- if you had to choose one of the following book/movie titles as your autobiography, which one would it be. The answers given by the celebrities gave a picture of how they view their life. Have you ever asked yourself- what should be the title of my autobiography?
This is a perfect example of the power of words, how words posed as questions can help us think better. Whenever I am stuck with situations, and I don’t know which path to tread on, I ask myself this question- if this was the book I was reading, how would I want the next chapter to be? The solutions become clearer and it becomes easy to take a decision.
Mind you, my mind does waver from being a hero to a villain to a background dancer to sometimes just the character artist, but at least picturing myself in a story setting, helps bring clarity which didn’t exist earlier. In a way, at the back of our minds, we know how we want this to end- majorly seeking a happy ending; hence, breaking it scene by scene can help figure out the next steps to be taken that can lead the story to its happy ending.
Let’s try this. Here are names of some of the best-selling books. Without worrying about what’s originally written in it, if you had to just pick one of the titles as your autobiography, which one would it be?
- Beauty and the Beast
- Anything is Possible
- Destiny’s Child
- A Gentleman of Leisure
- Pride and Prejudice
- The Naughtiest Girl
- The Dark Knight
- The Girl Who Knew Too Much
- Trust me Not
- The 3 Mistakes of my Life
- Flawed
- The Jungle Book
- Its Not Right..But Its Okay
- Lost in Love
- Flying Without Wings
(Add in any other title you like)
While you are at it, your mind would automatically be saying yes and no to one title or the other. Spend some time on the reasons of each yes and no. You could take this a step further and say which one could be your autobiography, if written today and which one would you want your autobiography to be? If there’s a change, what’s needed to be done by you to reach to the desired title?
This is a simple yet a powerful way to stop, reflect, and move on with things happening around you. You are the owner of this book to be written on your life. How best would you want it to end? How many sequels to the book would you want to have? What would be the mood or the main theme of each book? Would you choose dark, gloomy colors for the cover of your book or would you like light, pleasing pastels? Would there be a picture on the cover or just the title? How would the font look- bold and serious or quirky and curvy?
Every day of our life is a page in that autobiography, one page at a time, one word at a time and just like that our bestseller of a life is ready!
